How to Care for Your Gym Bag (So It Lasts)
Maya KhuranaA gym bag works hard. It goes everywhere you go — benches, changing rooms, car boots, cafe chairs — and it carries everything you need to perform at your best. But how often do you actually look after it?
With the right care, a quality gym bag can last for years. Here's how to keep yours looking and smelling as good as the day you got it.
First, Know Your Material
STÆRKE bags — including The Mini In-Gym Bag and The Mini Gym Bag in Espresso — are made from recycled materials. This means they’re durable and considered in their construction, but they do benefit from a little attention to keep them in top condition. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scrubbing, which can degrade the fabric weave and affect the colour over time.
The After-Session Routine (5 Minutes, Maximum)
A little consistency goes a long way. After each gym session:
- Empty it completely. Don’t leave damp kit or forgotten snacks in there overnight. Moisture is the enemy of any fabric bag.
- Leave it open to air. Let the bag breathe for an hour or so before storing it. Even a light session generates more sweat and moisture than you might expect.
- Wipe down the interior. A quick wipe with a damp cloth keeps the lining fresh and prevents bacteria building up over time.
Spot Cleaning
For surface marks and light stains, spot cleaning is your best approach:
- Use a small amount of mild soap (a gentle hand soap or baby soap works well) and a soft cloth or sponge.
- Dab at the mark rather than scrubbing — scrubbing can spread the stain and rough up the fabric surface.
- Rinse the area with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
- Leave to air dry completely before using or storing the bag.
A Deeper Clean
Every few weeks — or whenever the bag needs a more thorough refresh — follow these steps:
- Empty all pockets and compartments fully.
- Use a soft brush to remove any loose dirt or debris.
- Wipe down the entire exterior with a cloth dampened with mild soapy water.
- Clean the interior lining in the same way.
- Pay attention to the straps, which often collect the most sweat and skin oils. The Detachable Long Strap can be removed and cleaned separately — a useful feature that also makes care much easier.
- Leave the bag open and allow it to dry completely in a well-ventilated spot, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
What to Avoid
- Machine washing — the tumbling and agitation can distort the bag's structure and affect zips and hardware.
- Tumble drying or direct heat — heat can warp the structure and damage the material.
- Leaving it damp or folded for extended periods — this can lead to mildew and permanent creasing.
- Overpacking — consistently forcing too much into a bag puts strain on the seams and zips over time.
Storage Between Sessions
Store your bag somewhere it can breathe — not shoved at the back of a wardrobe or compressed under other bags. If you're not using it for a while, keep it stuffed lightly with tissue paper to help it hold its shape.
The Small Details Make a Big Difference
Keeping smaller items — like jewellery, lip balm, or earphones — in a dedicated pouch protects both the items and the bag's lining. The STÆRKE Jewellery Pouch is designed precisely for this: it keeps things contained, organised, and easy to find.
A bag that's cared for properly looks better, smells better, and lasts longer. It’s a small investment of time that pays off every single session.
